James Cameron’s very own “Titanic” is set to sink soon from a brother competitor, “Avatar”. Remaining strong at the top spot with $36 million for its sixth-straight weekend, the 20th Century Fox sci-fi film has now garnered a whopping total of $552.8 million in domestic box-office alone. The new numbers now raises “Avatar” to a massive $1.841 billion in worldwide gross. The newest blockbuster from Cameron now stands a mere $2 million away from beating “Titanic” at the top spot with $1.843 billion.
The same event is happening in international sales as “Avatar” has surpassed the $1.24 billion mark previously recorded by “Titanic” with a bigger $1.29 billion. The aliens of Pandora are gearing up full speed to seize the crown from “Titanic” once more as the highest grossing film in domestic box-office for all-time.
Fox’s head of distribution, Chris Aronson states, “It defies all superlatives”.
Hollywood.com box office analyst Paul Dergarabedian couldn’t help but agree saying, “We’re witnessing box office history. We’re watching all of these big records fall, and there doesn’t seem to be an end in sight. ‘Avatar’ is dominating at a time where it has no big summer blockbusters to compete with it. It’s perfectly poised to keep breaking all these records.”
As the awards season has begun, “Avatar” has managed to bag best drama and director honors in the Golden Globes. Speculations have been high that the film is a strong contender for the best-picture award in the upcoming Oscars. Nominations are not set to release until February 2.
