‘Dear John’ Dumps Avatar’s #1 Spot

James Cameron’s “Avatar” is finally knocked off the number one spot for its eight weekend by a moving war drama. Moviegoers were touched and cried tears for Lasse Hallstrom’s “Dear John” washing “Avatar” off from the top spot completely after already threatening it in the beginning.

On Friday alone, “Dear John” had already sailed past double of “Avatar” earnings with $13.8 million worth of tickets against a mere $6.2 million. Exhibitor Relations, Inc. estimate “Dear John” to garner a massive $32.4 million opening weekend. This number poses a significant $9 million gap between the latter and now-dethroned to second place, “Avatar”.

Despite the setback, Cameron’s “Avatar” continues to soar with a mile-high $630 million at domestic box-office from the small additional $23.6 million this weekend. Though “Dear John” had swept “Avatar” off the top spot, no film can rival as of yet the massive record-breaking gross for the film. It won’t happen until Cameron releases his next $200 million sci-fi, CGI epic, “Battle Angel” anytime on 2012.

Meanwhile, what drives audience to “Dear John” is its moving war romance revolving on young soldier back from war, Channing Tatum and his love affair with Amanda Seyfried. Though desperately in love, the decision to return to war after 9/11 had caused him to receive a letter from his girl that she is soon to be married. With the upcoming Valentine’s, more and more people are tuning in to romance flicks. For unknown reason, undying love, presented by “Dear John” always manages to attract millions of viewers worldwide.
