The more entertaining and relaxed amongst all the award shows, the 67th Annual Golden Globes ceremony, takes an interesting twist as they tap British comedy actor Ricky Gervais to host. In the press release by The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, they recall how the annual awards show didn’t have a host since 1995. John Larroquette and Janine Turner were the last to have the job in TBS last air of the show before being transferred to NBC. Organizers decided to rid of the host and utilized instead the massive star power from several celebrities presenting awards.
Gervais first appeared in the original British version of “The Office” which earned him and the show an unexpected win from the Golden Globes. Beating favorites “Arrested Development”, “Sex and the City”, “Monk” and “Will and Grace”, “The Office”, a low-rated unknown show took home the best comedy series. Much to everyone’s surprise, he also took home best comedy actor for “Extras”. However he is most noted for his hilarious antics in previous award shows that never fail to entertain the crowd. In the recent January Globes, appearing as a presenter, he cracks a joke to “The Reader” star Kate Winslet for her win saying “I told you. Do a Holocaust movie and the awards come! Didn’t I?”
For Hollywood Foreign Press Association president Philip Berk, they never thought a host was necessary. But when NBC executives suggested the idea would add a new spark to the show, they jumped for it with only one choice in mind. Berk says, “My response was the only person we could consider for the task would be Ricky Gervais, and we were lucky to get him.”
Paul Telegdy, executive vice president for programming at NBC backs him up saying, “Ricky is certainly one of the funniest people on the planet and has provided some of the most hilarious and memorable awards show moments in recent memory.” For Gervais his motivation for accepting the offer was the freedom from reins of hosting. Globes nominations will be announced on the 15th December.
