WWE Films expands its franchise and steps a few ways away from their comfort zone with its latest non-action melodrama film “Brother’s Keeper”. The film tells the tale of a high school boy who attempts to reunite his family ten years after his father, state college wrestling legend, died. Though lacking in talents, he decides that the only way to reunite with his mother and estranged former wrestling champ brother would be his entry into the high school wrestling team.
Devon Graye of “Dexter” is cast as the lead teenage boy while Patricia Clarkson known for her roles in “Whatever Works”, “Vicky Cristina Barcelona”, and in the upcoming “Shutter Island” plays the mother. WWE championship winner John Cena meanwhile had previously proven his acting chops in action films “The Marine” and “12 Rounds” would be taking on the role of the older brother. Joining them are Madeleine Martin as the teenage boy’s troubled best friend and Danny Glover as an enigmatic man appearing in the boy’s life frequently especially when he needs help most.
Scribe John Posey who also stars in the film as a high school wrestling coach, wrote the screenplay for the film to be directed by Mel Damski. Recently shooting has begun in the city of New Orleans.
Most likely as production progresses, the film would probably see a title change from the original “Brother’s Keeper”. Though wrestling is still an internal part of the film, WWE films appears to market it more as an appealing family film.
