Madonna is heading back to the big screen. But this time she won’t be appearing on it but behind it as she returns to the director’s chair. Her last directorial effort was way back in 2008 when she filmed the movie “Filth and Wisdom”. Now, the singer/actress is back up on her feet as she is assigned to direct the upcoming biopic “W.E.”. The film based on the scandalous affair between King Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson that once made headlines was written by Madonna herself together with scribe Alex Keshishian of “Truth or Dare”.
An actress has currently shown interest in one of the lead characters of the film. Reports confirm that Vera Farmiga, who earned a Best Supporting Actress nomination recently for “Up in the Air”, is eyeing the role of Simpson.
Madonna’s return in the directorial seat may be a good choice for the singer/actress whose film career hasn’t been well in the past few years. Her last major role was back in 2002 for “Swept Away”. Unfortunately, her performance was deeply scrutinized by critics to earn her several Razzie awards in the process including bagging Best Picture, Best Director for her ex-husband Guy Ritchie, and Best Actress. Appearing in front of the big screen after the series of Razzie awards would be a major risk.
For the meantime, Madonna would next be seen on the NBC reality series “The Marriage Ref”.
