Rene Russo finally completes the cast of Kenneth Branagh’s film adaptation of Marvel Entertainment’s Norse hero “Thor”. She will be joining the line-up of the major cast consisting of Anthony Hopkins as Norse god Odin, Chris Hemsworth as the lead titular role Thor, Natalie Portman as Thor’s love interest, and Tom Hiddleston as the villain Lokie. Russo would be starring alongside Hopkins as she is cast to play Odin’s wide and Thor’s stepmother, Frigga. Rumors are flying that Samuel L. Jackson and Stellan Skarsgard are also aboard.
The film features the Norse hero Thor cast down from the mighty Asgard to Earth where he is forced to thrive among the humans. Unexpectedly, he falls in love with a human on Earth (Portman). However aside from his blossoming love affair, he must face dangerous villain Loki, who’s plotting to dispatch the dark forces of Asgard to invade the Earth, with his supernatural powers.
Russo’s no stranger to playing a sweet yet tough female character with her roles as a kick-ass cop and love interest in “Lethal Weapon 3” and as a seductive detective in “The Thomas Crown Affair”. The grace, power, strength and charm she possesses and has craftily mastered over the years is perfect to bring life and on-screen presence to Thor’s mom. Her career began in 1990s when she starred alongside Clint Eastwood in “In the Line of Force”, John Travolta in “Get Shorty”, and Pierce Brosnan in “The Thomas Crown Affair”.
This would mark her return to the big-screen with a significantly more challenging role, showcasing her innate abilities than her previous performance in the weak remake of “Yours, Mine and Ours”.
Filming for “Thor” is set to begin on January with a scheduled release date on 2011.
